Amigos refurbish suite for bereaved
5:00pm Sunday 5th February 2012
Driven by a couple’s heartbreaking story, charitable biker gang the 3 Amigos have unveiled a newly refurbished suite at Withybush Hospital.
The Dickinson Suite, created for parents who have suffered a still birth, was set up by Paul and Kate Dickinson, who lost their son Jordan 11 years ago.
The room, which deteriorated over time, has now been refurbished using the money raised at the 3 Amigos Summer Show last year.
Terry Morris, of 3 Amigos, said: “My son-in-law and his wife started this off 11 years ago.
“It was heartbreaking for them, having lost their baby, to sit on the maternity ward with expectant mothers and parents with their babies.
“They decided that it would be nice if there was a room where a mother could receive the care she needs, out of the way of joyful mums and their babies.”
Paul and Kate, from Pembroke Dock, originally raised £1,800 through charity football matches and raffles to create the suite.
“And we are very grateful to the 3 Amigos for carrying it on,” said Kate.
“It means a lot to us, because when we lost our baby there wasn’t anywhere to go, and it was difficult to have to come back to the maternity ward.”
Head of midwifery Julie Wall said the room would be a family area where parents can grieve together and say a proper goodbye.
Terry, who said the 3 Amigos will continue their efforts to keep the suite in a good condition, said: “I think it’s one of those things that should be in every maternity ward.
“We will review how things are getting on, and if anything needs replacing at a future date, we will raise funds one way or another.
We will find a way.
“I hope that it never gets used again for its’ intended purpose, but if it does it’s here.”
