Council meetings could be broadcast online

9:35am Monday 6th February 2012

Pembrokeshire County Council looks set to become only the second local authority in Wales to broadcast its meetings on the internet.

Today’s corporate governance committee is recommended to approve a procurement procedure for a contract to provide webcasting of meetings.

The report to members suggests the move will cost around £15,000 for cameras, microphonesandwebhosting.

The move follows an original notice of motion by Conservative councillor David Howlett who had suggested allowing members of the public to film meetings to improve openness and accountablity. There had been concerns about how such public filming would be edited and presented so councillors decided that webcasting the meetings would be the best way forward.

Around 40 councils in the UK transmit their meetings on the internet with Cardiff currently the only local authority in Wales to broadcast meetings.

The plan is to start with full meetings of council with other committees phased in later.
