In the black

7:00pm Thursday 16th February 2012

JAMIE Phillips has continued his rise up the karate ranks by earning his second dan black belt.

Jamie is currently an assistant instructor at Milford Haven Karate Club, and helps coach and develop youngsters.

But he also competes himself on a regular basis, and enters tournaments all year round the United Kingdom.

The 23-year-old is currently preparing for the UKSA British Open later this month.

He recently came through a gruelling three hour examination to earn his second black belt.

In front of a panel of experts, Jamie’s karate techniques were scrutinised – while he also had to display his skills in self defence, pair work, and competition sparring.

Following that, he had to come through a series of fitness tests.

Kevin John, chief instructor at Milford Haven Karate Club, said Jamie had set an example for all young students.

“He is a model student,” said Kevin.

“He is proof to the youngsters that you can achieve anything with hard work and dedication.”

Kevin added that everyone in the club was delighted with his success.

“He thoroughly deserves it,” he added.

The Milford Haven club train on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Meads Leisure Centre – with sessions available for junior and adults.
